The Bottom Line

A classic example of how the Albany Port Authority works:

Local Save Our Sound campaigner Tony Harrison has a large banner that he pegs out beside his petition table. This banner was sponsored by five businesses, including a sign writing company that has operated in Albany for more than twenty five years.

Yesterday, on his way to present yet another petition to the upper house, Tony stopped in at the sign writing shop to ask for one more signature. The business owner declined, even though she had enthusiastically supported Tony's campaign in the past. "I can't do it," she said.
"Why?" He asked her.
"I've had a call from the Port Authority, regarding our business name being on your banner," she told him.
Apparently the head of the Port Authority rang the sign writing business to gently remind them that they were a client too.
That's all.
Just a reminder.

  2. "If" this project is so safe, as stated many times by the CEO of the Port, will he then be prepared to back his decision by providing a personal financial guarantee that there will be no inpact on the enviroment? If he will not do this then one must question his decision.

  3. Yes it does sound a bit heavy, kinda nightclub bouncer heavy.

People who behave like that are often feeling threatened, already. But asking him to put his money where his mouth is - grand idea!

  4. I believe someone once said,"money talks - people walk."

Small business in a small community such as this will usually feel obligated to their larger customers.

I agree with sarah's observation that this is an indicator of the discomfort felt by the Port (Cartman voice added here....) Orrthoritahh. (As in, "you shall respect ma orrthoritahh!")

Money, lifestyle choices, narrow and insecure world views, it's all tied up together...

or as my late, dear colleague, Bob, once said, "IT'S ALL .UCKED!"

  6. I agree jjot. Unfortunately, as you will see in the latest post, the bottom line is what's wrong with the Albany Advertiser. That's why blogs are so cool.
